Picture Catch-up

I have failed to post some pictures as I have taken them so here is a quick run down of this month's activities:

I made Irish Soda Bread for the first time for St. Patrick's Day. It turned out super yummy and according to the legend making a cross in the bread wards off evil spirits. So we should be evil free for the next year...hehe. I also tried a new kind of flour - Bob's Red Mill whole wheat pastry flour. It worked great and I am going to try it in cookies next.

Colin has made it quite clear that he does not want his little sister in his bedroom. This was a bathroom pass I used in my classroom when I taught. Colin has claimed it now.

We finally started prepping the backyard for sod. We had a friend come over and rotatill the dirt and Colin wanted to help put the dead weeds in the garbage.

Mike celebrated his 38th birthday on the 23rd. We went out to Red Robin for dinner and had planned to go to Adventure Park for mini golf...until Colin threw up in the car after we had left the restaurant. So we just came home and had cake and ice cream and opened presents. Colin and Katie got daddy a great Star Wars Lego set and I got him a Lemon tree. You know you're a homeowner when you get trees for your birthday. I also made the cake - devil's food with strawberry filling and chocolate cream cheese frosting, so I guess that counts as a present? The cake turned out really good and tasted even better.
I was finally able to put Katie's hair in pig tails. Her hair is a lot longer in the back than it is in the front. They stayed in for a good hour, then she pulled them out. I am going to try to put them in pig tails as often as possible because it is too cute!

New Words

While playing Jenga with Colin today, he said 2 words that I hadn't heard from him before. The first word he said was "chasm" and the second was "topple." I think those are pretty advanced words for a 5 year old. And he didn't just say the words, he used them in a sentence...properly!

Colin: "We don't want this tower to topple over."

After the tower did eventually topple over, he proceeded to use the Jenga pieces to make a bridge from the ottoman to the couch. After he had finished doing this, he took one of little Lego figures and walked him over the bridge.

He said to me, "Mommy, the bridge goes over the chasm so the man won't fall into the chasm." When I asked him what a "chasm" is he said that "it is a pit." Sounds good to me.

Colin surprises me every day, several times a day with the things that he says and does. Like at this very moment, he is standing right beside me reading this blog post as I type it. I could type anything and he will read it. He's 5! I am so amazed at his reading skill. He is still reading it and laughing now.

Colin: "Mommy is that perfect?"
Mom: "Should I finish the post, now?
Colin: "Yes. 'Bye now."

Yes, Colin, goodbye for now. Go play with your Legos.

Happy Birthday Mike!

Our local Fox station has a morning "entertainment/news" program called Great Day. You can send in birthday requests and they will air them on the day of that person's birthday. I have been doing this the past couple of years with Colin's and Mike's birthday and I wasn't about to pass it up this year.

You can watch the birthday video by going to this link: http://www.kmph.com/Global/category.asp?C=109339&nav=menu612_5_1
and clicking on the "Great Day Birthdays 3/23/09, 18 and over" link. It will play through a couple of birthdays and then Mike's will come up. I think it is so funny and they get a kick out of seeing themselves on the TV.

Colin's First Visit to the Dentist

Colin went to the dentist for the first time yesterday. We recently switched dentists to Dr. Sampietro (our friend) and it was such a great experience for all of us. I was in having my teeth cleaned at the same time as Colin's exam so Mike came with me to be with him. Mike had to sit in the chair with Colin and he let the Dr. look in his mouth, but would not let him clean or polish them. But he didn't freak out at all and didn't scream, so I guess that's a good start. We will try to see if Colin will let them clean his teeth at the next appointment in six months.

I Enjoy Being a Girl!

Katie is such a girly-girl. I enjoy buying new things for her and doing things for her. She still won't wear anything in her hair, but she will let me paint her toenails and she loves playing with babies and dolls. She loves to carry around a purse or any kind of bag. She likes to pick out her clothes. Best of all...she loves shoes!

I painted her toenails this awesome bright pink color today. I don't think there is anything cuter than painted baby-toes!

I bought Katie some new church shoes today...patent leather white ones. She saw the shoes in her room before bedtime while getting her jammies on and decided she wanted her new shoes on. She then grabbed her purse and headed to the front door. I just realized when I looked at this picture that she can now reach the door knob!Realizing that it was dark outside, she turned around and started walking to her room. She was so ready for bed. So this is Katie in her jammies, with her white patent-leather shoes and purse.
